What percentage of the world's population are willing to give 1% of their income to support climate action?

Most people underestimate the level of support for climate action, including Lee Dillon, Newbury MP, who thought the figure was about 3%, when he was asked this question during a recent meeting to show local support for the Climate and Nature Bill (see photo).

A recent study of over 100,000 people in 125 countries found the figure is actually 69%.
This “perception gap” matters:
  1. Governments will only change policy if they think they have strong public backing.
  2. Companies need to know that consumers want to see low-carbon products, & changes in business practices.
  3. We’re all more likely to make changes if we think others will do the same.
We can help reduce this perception gap by having more conversations about nature and climate, and by being good role models for low-carbon choices.
Please see our September newsletter for lots of brilliant local events coming up.

We share information from West Berkshire Council, including from the Town and Parish Climate Forum. Please subscribe to their Environment Newsletter, visit their online Green Hub and read their Environment Strategy 2020-2030  to find out more about available help and grants, the latest news from local eco-groups, and progress towards targets.

WBC July update: “As part of a six-month trial (starting in July 2025), local community groups and individuals are warmly invited to attend the West Berkshire Town and Parish Climate Forum. The forum, hosted by West Berkshire Council, is an opportunity to hear updates from the Council on their work to tackle the Climate and Ecological Emergencies and for Town and Parish Councils (and now a wider audience) to share ideas and hear from each other and guest speakers.

The online meetings (via Teams) are an hour long (12.30 - 1.30 pm) and take place on a Wednesday, every 4-6 weeks.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 30th July 2025. If you would like to be added to the distribution list for the meeting invites or have any questions, please email [email protected]. We look forward to welcoming you to our discussions as we learn together and increase our climate action.”

There is no charge for WBGE membership but please sign up here, or email [email protected] to find out more. Members receive approximately monthly emails and can unsubscribe at any time.
